Xubuntu 9.10 Clam AV or Avast!

    Hey everybody!

I am a total a new user to Linux operating system previously I was using Windows XP SP3. Being former computer system I am having AV on my mind. I have the basic understanding that Linux does not need AV, but I know do not want to pass anything on to my computer system.

Currently I am having ClamAV with KDE frontend, but calm is not running in the background or any of the other windows AV. Operator error?

here's what I am getting from SPM:

    -clamav
    -clamav-base
    -clamav-freshclam
    -klamav frontend

Hence I want to have Clam AV or Avast on Xubuntu 9.10, but which is better.

    Thanks,

I will suggest you to use avast! Linux Home Edition. It represents an antivirus solution for the increasingly popular Linux platform. The Home Edition is offered free of charge but only for home, non-commercial use. Both of these conditions should be met.

Some of the main features are given below:
    • Outstanding performance
    • Reasonable memory requirements
    • ICSA certified
    • Intuitive Simple User Interface
    • Independent on installed graphic libraries
    • Working with the scan results
    • Actions with infected files

According to Clam AV is very insufficient, I am saying this because I have tested it on my infected windows system. The Clam AV was able to find only one virus but AVG was able to detect more than 12 virus on the system.

If I were in you place then definitely I would not have used AV Calm. It is unreliable and also does not perform well on any system. I will suggest you to use AVG or better if you use Avast antivirus.

    Thanks for the reply,

I have installed Avast antivirus on my Xubuntu 9.10. operating system. It was working fine but when I tried to update the Avast antivirus it displayed the error message like this

“An error occured in Avast! invalid argument.”

Just to make it clear it is not because of I am using trial version. I have inserted the serial key which I have received from Avats on my email.

    Just to clarify,
I want to mention one thing that if your having windows partition on your system then only you will need the antivirus software for your system. If you have completely cleaned the system and installed a new Xubuntu 9.10 on your computer system then there is no need for you to use antivirus software. I think you have cleaned the previous operating system from your PC as you have mentioned.
