I think that this is a very good feature of windows XP. Since you always come to know whether another user using your system has installed a new application. This also helps you to get the newly installed application checked whether it is working properly or not. This will definitely help you to solve this problem.

For achieving this you need to make slight adjustment in the taskbar and properties. simply right-click on the Start Menu and click Properties. click on the start menu tab then select the customize button. Now look for the Highlight newly installed programs and check the corresponding check box. Apply the settings and close all the windows.
