    Hyper-V Cluster, ARP table problem

    Hello friends,
There are many hosts which are separated in rooms by using the switch. I am facing an issue when the Livemigration occurs and the virtual machines sometimes doesn't contact each other. I think that the problem is with the ARP Table Clear cache on them. I am not having much knowledge about the ARP Table, so thought to ask you guys.!! Please provide some help related to the Hyper-V Cluster, ARP table problem. Hope that somebody hanging out there would help me.!!

Re: Hyper-V Cluster, ARP table problem

Requiring high availability requirements of more and more important, Hyper-V is no exception to the rule and clustering virtual machine will be the axis of the most important developments of the next version of Hyper-V integrated into the new Windows Server, Windows Server 2008 R2 (also known as Windows 7 Server). Currently, Windows Server 2008 already allows for clustering of machines with a rocking fast with Quick Migration technology but its principle of operation involves a long downtime of services. Thus, the cluster is obliged to :
    1. Save the memory of the virtual machine on a shared storage
    2. Move control of the storage space that contains the virtual disk drives to make accessible the virtual machine on the second node (server) cluster.
    3. Reload the memory of the virtual machine from the shared storage space on the second cluster node.
    4. Start the virtual machine.

Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V role will benefit from a new technique called tipping more effective Live Migration. The aim is to switch a virtual machine in seconds and thus have very little downtime in case of malfunction. Its principle is simple :
    1. The memory of the virtual machine is copied and pre-loaded directly on the destination server.
    2. During the copy, customers continue to access the virtual machine on the first server and the memory locations are modified to be identified later copied in turn incrementally (so only changes) on the destination server. There will be less data to copy (only what has been changed) and the copy will be much faster.
    3. The virtual machine is then paused on the first server and restarted on the second server.
    4. The ARP redirect customers to the new server and since the session state is maintained, no reconnection is necessary for the client.

Re: Hyper-V Cluster, ARP table problem

The aim of this paper is to detail the implementation of one of the major new features of Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 R2. This feature called Live Migration is placed in direct competition with VMware's VMotion and helps maintain the availability of virtual machines during maintenance operations on server virtualization. It can be tricky on a virtualized infrastructure, to be forced to stop the virtual machines during a maintenance operation on the physical server requiring a reboot. The objective is to enable switching from one virtual machine from one physical server to another seamlessly without the slightest interruption of service.

Re: Hyper-V Cluster, ARP table problem

A message is sent to the physical switch to update the ARP table (the packets destination of the virtual machine no longer go through the same physical port). Although different hosts in a cluster have a different MAC address pool, the virtual machine retains its MAC address as the operating system is restarted. When you try to respond to a customer on a different subnet, the server must first send an ARP request for default gateway. In multicast mode, the ARP request contains a combination of the cluster virtual IP address and MAC address multicast unicast interface. Because some routers are designed or configured to not respond to packets with this combination of unicast and multicast, the server can not find the address of the default gateway. Therefore, the server can not respond to the request.

Re: Hyper-V Cluster, ARP table problem

To avoid this problem, create a static ARP entry on each NLB node for the gateway. If you can not, you should use some method to create an outbound connection to a local device from the node NLB to fill the ARP cache. This method should allow continuous communication between the devices to prevent timing out waiting for ARP cache entry. The symptoms you experience depend on the switch or router and how it reacts when you use ARP to ARP unicast and multicast IP Mac. Hope that this post helps you.
