The ._whatever files are generated on quantity that does not natively maintain full HFS file features (e.g. ufs volumes, Windows fileshares, etc). When a Mac file is copied to such a quantity, its data divergence is stored under the file's with normal name, and the extra or supplementary HFS information (resource fork, type & creator codes, etc) is accumulated in a subsequent file (in AppleDouble format), with a name that starts with "._". (These files are, of itinerary, imperceptible as far as OS-X is anxious, but not to other OS's; this can a little bit be irritating.)

.DS_Store file in generated by the Finder to continue the track of folder view alternatives, icon locations, and additional visual information in sequence regarding the folders. A separate .DS_Store file is generated in every directory to store information in sequence regarding that directory, so you will find them and come into view all over the directory tree, in attractive much in each folder you have visited with the OS X Finder.

~/.Trash is utilized to accumulate files, folders and document from the boot quantity that a specific user has terrified in the trash, but that have not been deleted yet. /.Spotlight-V100 is Used to accumulate meta data indexes and indexing rules for Spotlight (version 1.00 apparently). Only generated under Mac OS X 10.4.Permissions on /Volumes/(whatever)/.Trashes document are set so that you can only have a right of entry a trash can if you can guess the users' ID -- that is, you cannot examine a list of which users essentially have trash cans in survival. If you are trying to free disk space, this can make it to a certain extent tricky to find & remove the files in other users' trash cans.

Trashes are also a category of hidden file. On quantity additional than the boot volume, a .Trashes folder is used to embrace files & folders that have been put in the trash but not yet removed. In view of the fact that every user has their own individual trash can, subfolders are generated under .Trashes for dissimilar users, named according to their user ID number. For illustration, if user #501 throws something on a quantity named "Data" into the trash, it would be stimulated to a directory named /Volumes/Data/.Trashes/501/.

/.hidden includes a list of files for the Finder to put out of sight – it is one of three methods a file can be made imperceptible in OS X. This file is semi-superseded, i.e. it does not exist in an original installation of Mac OS X 10.4, but the Finder will stagnant respect it if it exists./.hotfiles.btree Uses to track frequently-used diminutive files so their location on disk can be optimized (a procedure called "adaptive hot file clustering"). /.vol is a pseudo-directory is used to have a right of enter the files by their ID number (aka inode number) rather than by name. For illustration, /.vol/234881034/105486 is file #105486 on volume #234881034.
