Don't you have disc drive on your macbook? To format from usb you need to make a setup bootable on usb key.
The internal hard drive to mac formate via "Disk Utility" from the DVD to install and in general there has not to do.
How to format mac by USB key:
- connect / mount your USB drive
- Open Disk Utility (Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility)
- select your USB drive
- Select the Erase tab
- you are given a number of formatting options
If your device is not formatted for Mac, open Disk Utility (Applications ı Utilities) and select your device. Tab Partition, Choose a configuration in 1 partition, then click the button Options to select the GUID partition table, the only way to boot an Intel Mac.
- Choose the format Mac OS Extended And finally format by clicking Apply.
- Insert your DVD of Snow Leopard, and double-click Installing Mac OS X.
- Click Next Then select your USB key as installation disk. Then click Customize Then uncheck all optional components, except perhaps Rosetta. T
- he installation should require 8.01 GB Your computer will now restart and install Mac OS X on your USB key, At the end of installing, hold the Alt key to reboot to choose to boot from your USB key.
- You start on a clean system, so feel free to do all the updates, and install some useful tools for troubleshooting, as TechTool Pro or DiskWarrior.
Plug the USB drive. The drive should mount on its own. Open Disk Utility (Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility). The flash drive must be listed on the left side of the window. Click it. Click the Erase tab. Make sure that FAT is selected as the format and click the Delete button.
You can use Disk Utility (you found in utilities folder inside the Applications folder) to format the USB pen in the Mac file system HFS +.
