You can find many applications for Windows to read many types of codecs.

Some windows applications are Windows Media Player, Real Player, VLC, Mplayer

Equivalent Ubuntu: VLC, Mplayer, Helix Player

    • Run the tool's advanced package management via the menus: System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager
    • Press the Reload button and wait for the download
    • Press the Search button and enter: ubuntu-restricted-extras
    • In the list that appears click the right mouse button on the online ubuntu-restricted-extras and choose Mark for Installation
    • Do the same thing for the packages: libdvdcss2, mplayer, mencoder, non-free-codecs, w32codecs, ffmpeg, vlc
