    Re: Brightness problem in netbook with Ubuntu 9.10

    Read the following note quoted from Ubuntu 9.10 release notes:

    A bug in the kernel-mode-setting (KMS) brightness handling on certain MSI Wind netbooks, including the U90, U100, and U120, results in a bad flickering effect whenever the brightness is changed on the desktop, as the brightness is repeatedly raised and then lowered. Users affected by this issue can use the same workaround as described in the previous note to disable KMS.

    Re: Brightness problem in netbook with Ubuntu 9.10

    This problem is summarized in that very beginning of the operating system and every time you press the brightness keys, the brightness rises and falls continuously, slowing the computer and causing an unpleasant effect.

    Although the bug is known , there a modification that can fix the problem, and this is what I will tell you:

    The trick is to change the boot configuration, so let's edit it with the following command:

    Code:
    sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
    Now add the "nomodeset" as a value of GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX:

    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX = "nomodeset"

    Finally update the GRUB configuration file with the command:
    Code:
    sudo update-grub
    I also recommend using the brightness applet instead of the shortcut keys to change the intensity of brightness.
