Windows 7 does not upgrade completely

I was using Windows Vista Home Basic operating system on my Compaq laptop and I decided to upgrade it to Windows 7 a couple of days ago. So, i started the upgradation at night and then went to sleep. The next evening when I checked my laptop for the upgradation, it was still on 90% of gathering information. I cannot understand why it is taking such long for such an initial stage of upgradation. So, the main problem is that Windows 7 does not upgrade completely and it stops at 90%.

One of my friends had a similar problem. Windows 7 did not upgrade completely and it used to halt at 87%. It was an AHCI problem and I think that it is the same problem here. You simply need to supply RAID drivers to your machine's motherboard. I am not sure of how to do it while booting from Windows 7 CD, but it may be the same as XP avd VISTA. When the booting from the CD strts press F6.

The problem that Windows 7 does not upgrade completely may be because you may be upgrading to a different version. You said that you are using Home Basic, then upgrade to Windows Home Premium. The following are the upgrading compatibilities:
    • Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional
    • Windows Vista Ultimate to Windows 7 Ultimate
    • Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium

I suppose that Windows 7 does not upgrade completely because the upgradation program must have hung. Check the same by going to the task manager. Open task manager by any of the 2 following methods:
    1. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
      OR
    2. Right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager.

If the upgradation program shows "NOT RESPONDING", then the program has hung. You need to terminate it and start the upgradation once again.

Re: Windows 7 does not upgrade completely

Windows 7 takes only 30 minutes to 610 minutes for completion of upgradation. That means that it takes a maximum of 10 hours to complete the upgradation. So, if Windows 7 does not upgrade completely in this amount of time, it means that there is some problem associated with the upgradation process. I suggest to to terminate the upgradation process and restart it. Hopefully, it may solve the problem.

Re: Windows 7 does not upgrade completely

If Windows 7 does not upgrade completely in your system, then well and good. I am saying this because I dont feel Windows 7 that advantageous to the previous versions. I will give you 7 reasons for this:
    1. It does not have much difference to Vista.
    2. It is more expensive as compared to the previous versions.
    3. XP and Vista work better than Windows 7.
    4. The similar old infrastructure is used to build Windows 7 that is insecure.
    5. You need a clean install to upgrade it from XP.
    6. Many of the programs are not compatible with Windows 7.
    7. It remains as a closed system.
