Ubuntu font installation

I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed on my linux box. I want to install some ttf fonts. The font file if true type font and so has .ttf extension. I don't know how to install fonts in linux, i know how to do it in windows. Can anyone help me with Ubuntu font installation. Thanks in advance...

I'm not too much familiar with linux but as in windows you have a fonts folder, there should be a fonts folder for linux too. Search your linux drive may be that could help you... Just a suggestion... If you want the basic font pack that are available in windows and you need them for open office then open terminal and run :

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

I already have those fonts, i installed them when i installed wine. I cannot find the font folder as there is not linux or ubuntu folder as there is windows folder in Windows OS. Can anyone guide me in a proper direction? I don't want to experiment and end up in a trouble with this live machine of mine... Thanks in advance...

Ok in the system partition you will find a folder with name : ".fonts". Paste all the font files that you want in this folder. Also if you want these fonts should be available to all the users on your machine paste the font files in this folder /usr/share/fonts. But for pasting the font files in this folder you need admin/root rights. For that use sudo command.
