Re: How to install XBMC for Linux on Ubuntu

Here is the step by step guide of installing XBMC for Linux on Ubuntu, just go through this:-

    • Adding the XBMC Repo
      • From the Desktop, click System -> Administration -> Software Sources.
      • Click the "Third Party Sofware" tab.
      • Click "Add". For the Apt line type the following, substituting "jaunty" for your version:
      • Click "Close". If you see a GPG Error upon closing the window, not to worry. That will be handled in the next step.

    • Adding PPA Keys
      • Click here to view the PGP key
      • Select the text from the beginning of the keyblock to the end (including those lines)
      • Copy that text to the clipboard (Edit -> Copy)
      • Open your text editor from Applications -> Text Editor.
      • Paste the key contents (Edit -> Paste)
      • Save the document in your home folder as xbmc-ppa.key
      • Reopen Software Sources, this time choosing the "Authentication" tab.
      • Click "Import Key File" and choose the newly created xbmc-ppa.key and press OK.

    • Installing XBMC

Now that the repo and key have been added, install XBMC like any other program.
      • Click System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
      • Click "Reload"
      • Search for "xbmc"
      • Mark xbmc and xbmc-standalone for installation and mark additional changes when prompted.
      • Click "Apply" and agree to the changes after reading them.

XBMC is now installed and ready for use.

By following these instructions, your system will boot directly into XBMC rather than your desktop from now on. It is advised that you delay this step until XBMC is setup as you'd like it.

    1. From the desktop click System -> Administration -> Login Window
    2. From the "Security" tab choose "Enable Automatic Login" and select your username.
    3. Click "OK" to exit.
    4. Logout of your system.
    5. From the Login screen choose "Select Session"
    6. Choose "XBMC" and click "Change Session"

Thats it !! Next time you login you should be greeted with XBMC.

XBMC stands for Xbox Media Center and is a free, open source multimedia player that runs on the first-generation Microsoft Xbox, (not the newer Xbox 360), as well as on computers running Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It can be used to play/view the most popular video, audio, and picture formats, and many more lesser-known formats, including:

    • Video - DVD-Video, VCD/SVCD, MPEG-1/2/4, DivX, XviD, Matroska
    • Audio - MP3, AAC.
    • Picture - JPG, GIF, PNG.

XBMC can also play multimedia from a computer over a local network (LAN), or play media streams directly from the Internet.

    1. XBMC can play DVD-Video movies (with and without menus) from ISO/IMG images and even ZIP/RAR-archives.
    2. XBMC has playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast feature and many audio visualizations.
    3. XBMC can in addition run python-scripts written for XBMC as plugin widgets.
    4. XBMC has a simple user interface that's pleasant and easy to use.
