PCs are now shipped with Vista. You can choose to delete Vista and go back to XP, but it needs some conditions. be aware that the Vista license is valid for XP, provided it is not Vista Home (Basic or Premium). However, the operation still works, but it fell into piracy as Microsoft terms of sale.

The following are to be met to reinstall XP instead of Vista:

    • Make sure you have all of the drivers for XP (see the manufacturer's website), and especially if the SATA driver installation CD of XP is not a very recent version.
    • If there are SATA drives, which has the SATA drivers XP compatible, on diskette or CD in the installation of XP
    • Formatting the hard drive, install XP from any CD to install XP (but you must have a license number to install it), and at the time of activation, select "activate by phone". If Vista is not a Home, the operator will set the appropriate code. If Vista is a Home, XP can not be registered.
    • If we perform the operation after configured and used Vista, and after installing software, the manipulation is the same, but there is another preliminary operation: use the Windows Transfer Wizard (which works both ways: XP to Vista, and Vista to XP, but also in the "backup" and "restoration").

1 - Use the wizard to save its config on another disk, another partition, or a DVD
2 - Install XP as described above
3 - Use the wizard to restore the configuration of Vista in XP.

How to install Windows XP on Vista

    • Insert Windows XP install/recovery CD and restart your computer.
    • Install Windows XP normally, providing either the product key that came with the disk, or the one you got from Microsoft customer support. If the installer warns you that another copy of Windows is already installed, don't worry. Remember, this install will wipe out your existing Vista installation.
    • Activate Windows XP when it prompts you to do so. If you run into the "already activated" problem, you can use the option to activate by phone.
    • If you own Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, explain to the rep that you want to use your Downgrade Rights to install XP Pro.
    • If you own Vista Home Basic/Premium, or you are installing XP Home Edition, don't mention ANYTHING about Vista. Just give the rep your XP product key (not the Vista key), explain that you are installing XP on a new hard drive, and tell them you need to activate.

Installing Windows XP in dual boot (dual boot) or multi-boot when Vista is already installed

    • Ensure you have necessary drivers, XP compatible. Most drivers are XP compatible, but it is better to have some drivers: very new hardware installed on Vista, graphics card and sound card edge, etc.
    • If the PC is equipped with SATA, SATA drivers prepare a disk if the PC is equipped with a floppy drive.
    • Download bootsect.zip,
    • In Vista, for a raw partition (need to use the tools disk management, see Partition a disk in Vista)
    • Once this raw partition is there, restart to begin installation of XP.
    • In the case of SATA drives and drivers on disk, read the bottom line of the screen at the beginning of the installation of XP to type F6 as soon as the words "Type F6 to install third-party drivers. Follow the instructions and install the SATA drivers. If the drivers have been integrated into the installation CD, do not take into account this point and continue.
    • XP will detect "another OS" and will ask whether to install or update. Do NOT say "update" because it would crush Vista.
    • Then choose "Custom installation" and "I want to select the installation unit."
    • XP will display the partition on your PC: select the partition blank and continue the installation.
    • When installation is complete, restart XP, and Vista will be gone (or an error message "A disk read error occurred" will appear.
