Ubuntu cannot mount CD/DVD drive

I have ubuntu 8.04 on my computer and something is wrong. I don't know what went wrong and when. I just noticed it today when i tried to copy a file from a CD. My ubuntu cannot mount CD/DVD drive and when i try to access it, i get an error saying "Unable to mount location" "Cannot mount file". What may be wrong? Can anyone help me?

I have a similar problem. Along with CDs, USB drives also doesn't mount with my ubuntu. DVDs mount fine, the problem lies with CD and USB drives. I tried to format the drives in ext3, fat, fat32 from other ubuntu box, but nothing seems to work... Help!!

Same problem with my Kubuntu 8.10. I cannot mount cd-rom . When i try :

sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom

It gives me an error saying : "mount: No medium found". What could be done? Please help us...

Isn't it a hardware problem? Just check it out. Well this was a bug in ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 after you update from 7.10. Update your OS as there have been patches that resolve this problem. Hope this help you... All the best!
