    Windows XP will not shutdown

Hi to all of you around here, Just few days back i did the fresh install of Xp on my system, the wired thing happening is when i clicks on restart or shutdown from my start menu, the xp never goes to shutdown, It goes till the screen with the message "Windows XP is shutting down" and gets hangs on this screen, after waiting for several minutes i had to switch it off manually by holding down the power key. Really getting irritate with this, please let me know if you are aware or and having any suggestions about this issue.

I'll suggest first you should update your virus definitions of run a full scan. The same with your spyware cleaner. A virus or spyware running in the background can interrupt your system when you go to shut down.

    Try the following:

    • Start/Run and type Regedit
    • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENT CONTROL SET/CONTROL
    • Click on “Control”
    • Select “Wait to kill service timeout”
    • Right click and select “Modify”
    • Set to a lower value than 2000
    • A setting of 200 will be sufficient

Normally setting value is 2000 and it can get get reduced to 200.

I was having similar issue with XP few days ago, got advice to use CCleaner to clean unwanted registries. And i did full scan with CCleaner and problem got solved. You can also use a Registry Tune Up , its also good.
