    Error bootmgr.exe missing

Whenever i am trying to boot up my system without the inserting Vista dvd, the system gives me error saying "bootmgr.exe missing press control-alt-delete to restart". Ive tried doing the repair from the DVD, but when i do so i get a message saying that i need to disconnect usb devices.I've tried disabling my firewall as well, but with no luck. Please help me out of this error.

When we get these sort of errors we suspect either the file system or the hard drive. Run Startup Repair again and see if it still reports errors. The installation dvd itself has a new startup repair tool that will repair startup problems automatically when used. When first seeing the Vista installer load up look for the repair tools option seen below the install now button to proceed to the next screen there."bootmgr" is short for boot manager, and without this, your computer simply doesnt know how to start vista from your hard drive.

If bootmgr.exe is really missing on the C: drive, copy it to the root of C: from the DVD under the command prompt.First of all go into your BIOS menu. Make sure your cd/dvd drive is set to be your primary boot device. This way you can run your setup disk in the next step. If you run into a "bootmgr exe missing" error, try to scan your pc.The improper addition or removal of software or hardware can easily cause your registry to get corrupted, thus leading to the point where a "bootmgr exe missing" error and other errors can start to appear.

I can suggest you to download and run vistabootpro. With bootpro you can make changes to the Windows Boot Configuration Data (BCD) registry quickly and easily, doing the job in a fraction of the time it would take using the alternative DOS based command lines. There is no longer the need to become familiar with the ins and outs of the bcdedit.exe switches and options.

Rebuild the BCD store by using the Bootrec.exe tool

    1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
    2. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next.
    4. Click Repair your computer.
    5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
    6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
    7. Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd , and then press ENTER. • If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes . A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.
    • If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
    Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    Bootrec /rebuildbcd

    8. Restart the computer.

    More information here.
