Windows XP keeps a record of all files on the hard disk so that when you do a search on your drive it is faster. This feature slow your computer and if you do not Need to search then it would be better to disable it. So start by opening the desktop, right click on your disk and go to properties.
At the bottom of the window you will see a box labeled "Allow indexing this disk for fast searching for files, uncheck it and click OK. A new window will open and you must select Apply to all subfolders and files.

    1. In Windows Explorer, right click the mouse on the icon for your USB drive and select Properties.
    2. Open the Hardware tab and double click your USB drive or external hard drive.
    3. Open the Policy tab.
    4. Select Optimize for better performance. Validate by OK.
    5. Confirm the restart of your computer by clicking the Yes button.
    6. To avoid loss of data, before you unplug your USB drive, you must click on the Remove Hardware icon in safety in the notification area of the taskbar and then click the name of your USB key.

The limiting factor is not the time for accessing data, but the bandwidth of the USB bus. There is evidence, moreover, that the access time of flash memories are more interesting than the mechanical mass storage.
But again, there are USB sticks with mediocre components, a USB 1.1, cannot not compete with a 7200 RPM hard drive or USB 2.0 , you must be Having usb 1.1 port or Drive , upgrade anyone in either case
