Windows XP patch breaks Office 2000

I recently downloaded some patches of Windows XP from Microsoft website. Now the problem is that whenever I install it on my computer, it causes Office 2000 to break. Do you know anything about this problem or heard about this issue? Can you help me to fix this ?

Even I had some similar issue with Office 2000 and Windows patches. In my case, most of the Microsoft applications got disabled. I didn't had any solutions and so I just hidden the error message which was appearing like this way:

    1. Go into the application's Options
    2. Select "Advanced" from the navigation pane on the left.
    3. Unselect the "Show add-in user interface errors" checkbox.
    4. Save the changes by clicking OK button.

A registry fix should solve your problem. Try to follow the below steps :

    1. Login with administrator privileges on your computer
    2. Click on Start, then Run
    3. Type Regedit and press Enter to open the registry editor window.
    4. Navigate to
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Cached
    5. Right Click on it and Select New -> DWORD Value with and enter the following: {A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9} {000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0×401
    6. Set the Data of this value to 1
    7. Close the Registry editor
    8. Reboot your machine

Re: Windows XP patch breaks Office 2000

There is a bug in Microsoft and they have confirmed, as said by zdnet, that "A "critical" Windows patch can cause trouble on computers that run certain Hewlett-Packard photo-sharing software or the Kerio firewall". The troubles include being unable to access or save files in special folders like "My Documents" and "My Pictures," and unresponsive Office applications, Microsoft said. Other issues include applications that crash after trying to open a file, no response after typing an address into Internet Explorer's address bar, and no effect after right-clicking on a file and selecting "Send To," Microsoft said. According to Zdnet, the problems occur because HP's "share-to-Web" software and the Kerio firewall interfere with a new file (verclsid.exe) delivered by the security update as said by Microsoft.

A registry fix as described earlier can solve your problem.
