Hi,
Follow these steps to enable the Automatic Updates service:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2. In the right pane, double-click Automatic Updates.
3. Click the Log On tab.
4. In the You can enable or disable this service for the hardware profiles listed below box, click the current hardware profile, and then click Enable.
5. Click Apply, and then click the General tab.
6. Click Start, and then click OK.
Try this.
See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:

Automatic Updates disabled by virus
OR
run
sfc /scannow
then recheck it
Hello friends,
I must say that the problem is not going to be solved if the virus is there in your machine.
You can not make it update automatically unless you remove those threats from your machine is what i have experienced with my system.
I would rather suggest you to scan your system with a good & updated antivirus spy ware program.
I had used SuperAntiSpyware & it worked great for me.
I must recommend you the same product & it will solve your problem.
