have you check the volume control on the panel. It has a new Sound Theme tab. on that you can set the theme for your system sounds there. If you wish to disable system sounds set Sound Theme: No Sounds.
Check that your sound volume is not very low. go to sound settings and maybe System > Preferences > Sound can help.
Open a terminal window, and type "find /lib/modules/`uname -r` | grep snd". You should see a whole list of items come up. If you not fined this it means that the upgrade process missed installing the kernel modules for sound. To fix this, type this at the command line.after installation reboot your system.sudo aptitude install linux-ubuntu-modules-`uname -r` linux-generic
i Also am having the same problem.
I typed the code you gave and got a whole list.
But still no sound.
Any suggestions?
Can you try to install module-assistant and also the source which the help of disable asoundconf. After that just check there is appropriate drivers installed in your system or at least you have a copy of the same somewhere on the hard drive. You must also take care about the configuration that your system must support Linux. Try to look on the manufacturers site for the driver.
