    No Sound with XP Pro

Hi, I was given a second hand computer. I had to install XP Professional and now I have no sound. Ran DxDiag and this is the info:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.080814-1233)
    Language: English (Regional Setting: English)
System Manufacturer: MICRO-STAR INTERNATIONAL CO., LTD
    System Model: AWRDACPI
    BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
    Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.60GHz
    Memory: 768MB RAM
Page File: 358MB used, 1520MB available
    Windows Dir: C:\WINDOWS
    DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
    DX Setup Parameters: Not found
    DxDiag Version: 5.03.2600.2180 32bit Unicode

    ------------
    DxDiag Notes
    ------------
DirectX Files Tab: No problems found.
Display Tab 1: No problems found.
Sound Tab 1: No sound card was found. If one is expected, you should install a sound driver provided by the hardware manufacturer.
    Music Tab: No problems found.
    Input Tab: No problems found.
    Network Tab: No problems found.

Can anyone help me to get the sound back please. Thank you.

You could check the Intel site to see if there are any updated drivers. Maybe a Windows update messed with the current ones or something. Look at recent Microsoft updates in Contorl panel--> add remove programs. Tick the box to show updates. If there were recent updates that co-incide with this issue. If you find any for hardware then remove them using the add/remove programs function.

Another choice is to perform a system restore to a date prior to this problem. You may have it recur if it was an update from Microsoft.

Re: No Sound with XP Pro

First, what did you have before you installed Windows XP Pro?
I doubt you know the model of your sound card, but if you do, you can just google it and download the drivers from the manufacturer’s web site. An alternate way to check is to look in the user’s manual for your computer. There will be a section (usually in the back) listing the specifications for your laptop (it will list all the hardware devices). Just find the name of your sound card or chipset on there and google as mentioned above.

When you find the drivers, if they’re in .exe format, you can just run them and the install should run smoothly. Sometimes they’ll require manual installation (meaning you have to unzip, then point device manager to look for the driver files in a specific location). If you need help with that, get back to us.

Problem solved. Used System Spec to find out motherboard details. Went to manufacturers site, downloaded the manual, downloaded the driver - music to my ears. "Perseverance is a virtue". Thanks for the help.
