Unable to measure System Cache in Windows XP

    Hello Friends,

I am using Windows XP for quite a long time, but recently i have upgraded my system RAM from 512 MB to 1 GB that is adding one more 512 MB RAM stick to the previous system configuration.

But What I see is 1 GB of physical RAM, 512 MB of free RAM and 256 MB of this physical is in a system cache. Then there is 512 MB of committed memory.

When I run the performance monitor, I see about 64 MB in Memory/Cache bytes.

Can anybody tell why system calculates wrong system cache.

    Appreciate you suggestions..

Every motherboard has a specific capacity limitation, both per slot and overall. Thus, it may be that your motherboard can only accept 512MB modules/sticks of RAM or lower, not 1GB modules. It's not possible to tell without knowing the exact model number of either the PC or motherboard, but that's likely the case. (FYI: That can sometimes be fixed by updating the BIOS.) Other than that, I'd look at a possible case of bad RAM.

This behavior can occur for any of the following reasons:
    • Himem.sys is not using all the memory on an EISA computer.
    • A driver or program loading from the Config.sys or Autoexec.bat file is claiming a portion of random access memory (RAM).
    • A virtual device driver loading from the System.ini file is claiming a portion of RAM.
    • A protected-mode driver is causing the memory mismatch.
    • The registry is damaged.
    • A CMOS setting is disabling some of the RAM.
    • You have the "maxphyspage=" setting in your System.ini file set to restrict Windows from using some of the installed memory.
    • Ramdrive.sys is being loaded in the Config.sys file.
