Hello , Dvorak has been built in to Microsoft Windows since version 3.0.here is the Steps In Windows XP, the route is: Start → Control Panel → Regional and Language Options → Languages → "Details" button → add (under Installed services) "English (United States) - United States Dvorak". Windows may then ask for the Windows install disk to grab the layout. Click "OK" until you're out, and you're done!

The Dvorak keyboard layout, designed for speed and efficiency by Dr. August Dvorak in the 1930s, can increase typing speed and decrease finger fatigue. It places all the vowels in the left hand of the home row and the most commonly used consonants in the right hand of the home row. Because the frequently-used letters are right there underneath your fingertips and the next most common are directly above, typing involves much less reaching. In this sample paragraph, 70% of the letters are on the home row in Dvorak, with 15% top and 15% bottom. In QWERTY 30% are on the home row. Beware, it takes a little getting used to, especially if you're transitioning from a standard QWERTY keyboard.

I found out about Dvorak though the job that I do (I work for a charity helping people who have complex communication and/or physical difficulties) and when I started getting wrist pain from typing I decided to try Dvorak. I've been using it for about 5 months and now type at about 57 words per minute in qwerty and 61 in dvorak. I've found it much more comfortable and intuitive to type with, though it does have a few draw backs, such as most keyboard shortcuts have been designed to be easier using the qwerty layout and the majority of keyboards you'll come across are qwerty keyboards. I have my pc set up so that I can press ctrl+alt+2 to change to dvorak in a program, or ctrl+alt+1 to change back to qwerty. I still use qwerty as well just because I want to retain my qwerty typing skills, but I find dvorak particularly good if I'm typing a lot of text in a word document for example. I would urge anyone to try it out, its very quick and easy to learn and use. I regularly test my typing speed and practice with a free typing program called Stamina, which can use qwerty or dvorak layout. More recently I have come across the Colemak layout as well, which I'm sure is very good too, but I don't want to frazzle my brain trying to use that one too!
