Problem while installing Ubuntu

hello guys
can anyone tell me that how can i install ubuntu in my pc. Recentrl iam using vista but when iam boot frm ubuntu & installing them its asking for formatting whole HDD. Is there any option to format only windows partition & install ubuntu or install ubuntu in other partition with windows vista. Please reply guys.

It is much easier to install Windows and then Ubuntu, so if Windows isn't already installed, install it first. If you leave space for Ubuntu at this step you don't have to resize your NTFS partition later saving a bit of time.
