Win 7 can't install drivers for optical drives

I have two optical drives, a Sony CD-RW CRX320EE ATA CD-RW drive, and a Samsung (TSST) CDDVDW SH-223F DVD-RW drive. The Sony is a bit old, but the Samsung is brand-new. Both worked fine under Vista. Neither manufacturer supplies downloadable drivers for these, since they're plug and play, and the OS is supposed to recognize them automatically. I've uninstalled them in Device Manager and rebooted, whereupon Windows tries to install but fails. I get the message "Device driver software was not succesfully installed."

his problem may occur if one of the following scenarios is true:The filter drivers in the CD and the DVD storage stack are not migrated successfully to Windows Vista.
You uninstalled CD software that fails to properly remove itself in the registry.
You installed software that adds filter drivers in the CD and the DVD storage stack that interfere with existing filters.

1. Click Start , type services in the Start Search box, and then select Services in the Programs list. (or click start > run > and type in services.msc)
2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password or click Continue .

3. Under Name, locate the Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework service. Verify that the Startup type is set to Automatic . Additionally, verify that the Service status is set to Started .
Note If the Startup type is not set to Automatic , right-click Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework , and then click Properties . In the Startup type box, click Automatic , and then click OK .
