Your system might be infected with viruses. Do the following:
- Scan in Safe Mode with current version antivirus after updates.
- Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-aware. These programs are free, so use them both since they complement each other.
- Make sure you've visited Windows Update and applied all security patches. Do not install driver updates from Windows Update.
- Run a firewall
- A combination of HijackThis and About:Buster works well in removing the About:Blank homepage hijacker. This is an expert tool, expert help is recommended for using this.
In Windows XP in the Control Panel, the left hand side that says “Switch to Classic View” or “Switch to Category View” can sometimes be missing. To re-enable this you need to click Tools, then Folder Options and under the General tab ensure that “Show common tasks in folders” is selected then click OK.
