Make sure you don't have antivirus software set to scan email. The long time that it is taking for opening emails and deleting them may be due to the time taken for scanning the emails before the action taken.

When trying to delete that message, are you getting some "Internal Error" message? If this is, try following this solution,
    1. Close Windows Mail
    2. Click Start
    3. Click Computer
    4. Double-click "C" drive (your hard drive)
    5. Double-click the Users folder
    6. Double-click the folder with your user name (ex: mine would be deveritt)
    7. Double-click the AppData folder
    8. Double-click the Local folder
    9. Double-click the Microsoft folder
    10. Double-click the Windows Mail folder
    11. Backup all files in this folder to an external hard drive, flash drive, CD, etc
    12. After backing up, delete the file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore
    13. Double-click the Backup folder
    14. Double-click the New folder
    15. Delete the file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore
    16. Close all open windows
    17. Restart Windows Mial and the message database will be rebuilt

You can't reinstall Windows Mail on its own, it is an integral part of the operating system. I also dont think Windows Mail is repairable.

If after trying many things you still cannot delete the messages, then there is possibility that your email account has been corrupted. In this case, no need to repair/reinstall complete Windows Mail, You can just rebuild a new account and delete the corrupted account.
    • Delete your current email account. (Click on Tools, Accounts in Windows Mail)
WARNING: Be sure to backup (Export) any email messages you want to keep.

    • Close and reopen Windows Mail.

    • Add the email account again. (Click Tools, Accounts, Add, E-mail)
