There no way out man! Can't you see the virus infection has locked you up! If you don't want to go through the pain of re-installing XP you will have to be in the lock up...! First take back-up of your data, then format your drives and clean install XP then install an antivirus software and update it. Now restore your data and scna if there is any virus left. If any clean it. Install all the necessary softwares and drivers. Now either use Ghost tools from norton or similar software and make a clone or image of your Hard disk. so if next time somthing happens you can install everything very qickly from the image or clone of your disk!
    All the best!
Are you sure that this problem occured due to virus ?

I was having (fully updated) KAV 2009 + Comodo Internet Security at that time.

    hey!
Yeah! i'm damn sure... Its a virus...! I had a similar issue too... So considering the situation is not less then what my was...! Its better if You format your Hard disk, not only the boot drive but all the drivers so that the virus doesn't keep coming back! I had formatted my drive [only the windows boot drive] and in no time the virus hit back! So delete all the partitions and recreate them from a Bootable disk and not windows...
    All the best!

Thanks for the advice. I'll finally go the format route !

Would you please provide the name of the virus and more info ?
