Run msconfig command and click on Start up tab and remove unnecessary programs launching on start up . Hope you'll find improvement in your startup.

    Speedup Windows XP

Windows XP is slow to start because of the following reasons.: -

    • Services: - Windows XP starts many services during bootup. You can remove some services that start up with the computer boot up like indexing service and many other that actually slows your computer even during normal operation. You can disable all these by clicking start button (bottom left in the task bar) then clicking run.. In the dialog type a word msconfig. Then click enter to get a dialog box. In this dialog box click services and remove the tick mark from the squares of the services like indexing service etc and all other services that you know are not required.
    • Boot INI: - Then click Boot INI tab in the same dialog and reduce the timeout from 30 seconds to 3 seconds.
    • Startup: - Then click the Startup tab in the same dialog and remove tick from all check boxes where the file is not required to start with the computer. For example the files like HP printer, etc. But do not remove ticks from your antivirus, firewall etc which must be started up always to prevent virus attacks. Now close the dialog box.
    • Delete files: - Now delete files in the windows temp folder and windows prefetch folder and also temp folder of documents and settings folder. Empty the recycle bin and create a restore point thereafter.
    • Defragment Hard Disk: - Now defragment the hard disk.

You can feel the speed of your pc once you reboot after all these steps.
