If you bought a new hard drive, many manufacturers offer imaging applications for free just for buying their product. The imaging applications will create an entire image of the old hard drive on the new hard drive and it will be bootable. No need to load any software or anything.
You need to create a complete "mirror" of the partitions on the drive, including the bootsector. Norton Ghost is the best software to create mirror image of your files.
You can also use Acronis True Image to clone your hard drive to another.
If you don't want to spend, then put your new drive in as the master drive and the old drive as a slave, install the OS to the new drive, copy over the files that you want from the old drive, and then format the old drive. Just try out.
