Is Windows Vista necessary for Direct X 10 comaptability and gaming

Is DX 10 needed for new games and therefore vista? Here I have a asus P5K SE quad 6600 and I'll get a new graphics card (4850) and hdd.
(I could not afford to buy it all the time) but I turned in a 32 bit xp. I may also be mounting in adobe pro. Here is my question. Can I play the latest games with DirectX10 (no vista) and my quad if I go on a 64 bit xp? I hope I'm clear; Thank you all in advance.
    Totally Clueless! (Well, almost!)

You can play without direct x10 which does nothing (a part in some games and not many).
For XP 64-bit, I do not see the point (unless you want to save more than 3 GB of ram) and I can not see the relationship with your quad (which is crazy as it is of 32 bits or 64) and for adobe-pro depending on what you do 4 GB of ram can be a useful but it depends what you do really.

So far nothing out there even uses directx10s new stuff. Basically directx 10 is directx9 + new stuff.

The answer is yes other graphics cards will run using vista and directx 10

    It is confusing really :]

As the control panel does not depend on the driver model I am not surprised the use it for XP too. But the Direct3D 10 runtime is written against the new driver model and therefore it cannot work on Windows XP. I know that at this point the next question would be if it isn?? possible to write a runtime based on the old Windows XP driver model. Maybe but it would be much harder than with the new model. As the official support for Windows XP will end soon it?? simply too much work that needs to be put in a system.
