You may have noticed under Windows XP, a file size (equal to your RAM) called hiberfil.sys lies at the root of your C: drive.
This file allows Windows XP or 2000 to put in a state of hibernation system and thereby accelerate the restarting the machine.
If you do not use this feature, it is possible to recover the space occupied by this file by going to Control Panel "Power Options", then in the "Hibernate" to remove the "Enable hibernation."
Hiberfil.sys file will be automatically removed from your disk.
Hope that helps
The file, hiberfil.sys, is a copy of the computer's RAM when the computer goes into hibernation. It's size corresponds to the amount of RAM on your computer, usually anywhere from 512 MB to over 1 GB. The easiest way to delete it is by turning off the hibernation feature.
Steps
- Open Power Options from the Windows Control Panel.
- Go to the Hibernate tab.
- Uncheck the Enable hibernation box to turn the hibernation feature off.
- Click OK or Apply to accept your changes.
- Restart your computer.
- Check the C:\ directory to see if hiberfil.sys was automatically deleted.
Tips
- Check the Enable hibernation box to turn hibernation back on.
- This file can be the cause of errors. Turn off hibernation and remove the file if you see this error: "The system restoration image is corrupt. Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."
