The file and the external hard drive are of which file format? Max file size for FAT32 formatted drives is 4GB.
This error occurs when you are copying a file of 4GB or larger to a FAT32 disk. You can either use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to reformat the whole external hard drive in the Mac OS Extended format or fragment (divide) the file into two or more files and then copy to your external hard drive.
But if I reformat it to Mac OS Extended format then wouldn't that mean that I can never use it on a Windows PC?
In short yes, you will not be able to use it on Windows based OS again. But you could buy MacDrive and install on Windows computer. This will let you format the drive in HFS+ (OS X format) and still access it in Windows.
