Generally, you need to turn off the speakers by a switch when you plug in a headphone.
I have dell inspiron 5150 laptop..normally when we plug in the speaker or headphones to laptop, we wont get sound form laptop but my laptop speakers doesn't turn off when i connect the speaker or headset in the audio jack. PLS HELP ME OUT FRIENDS.????
A lot of people are facing similar kind of problem and therefore it seems to be a satic zap problem. A lot of people noted it happened shortly after plugging in speakers or a headset to their speaker jack on the laptop. I think this is zapping the onboard sound chip. So, if your dell is under warranty replace it and get some other model. Even uninstalling and reinstalling the sound drivers doesnt work.
