What makes a computer "slow"?

hey guys,

I have a computer that runs extremely slow, to the point we don't even turn it off now because it takes between 4-5 mins to actually to power up. Then another 2-3 minutes to open a program or the internet. No errors in the winxp event log, its just that my computer is slower, applications load slower, screen doesn't refresh as fast as it used to, for example when i minimize yahoo messenger, takes a couple seconds to minimize instead of minimizing right away, im even noticing a delay in text appearing on the screen while I am typing here, this is very strange, PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!
