Problem with installing Compatibility Pack to view Office 2007 file

I am having a MSI laptop that came with Windows XP Pro and Office 2003 pre-loaded. There are many of my clients who send me files (excel, word, powerpoint) that are actually created on Office 2007. Here’s my difficulty. As we know we wont open office 2007 files under 2003 hence I tried downloading Compatibility Pack but there seems to be some problem with the same. Every time I am installing the compatibility pack it gives me an error message saying :

“Network error while attempting to read from the file: C:\Program files\MSECache\O2007Cnv\1033\Microsoft MS Office 2007 Compat_12.0_270307_1.msi”

I don’t what is that file giving this error. Can anyone please help me completing this installation ?

Even I don’t know what is that file and how are you getting the error. Just to test the same I download Office 2007 Compatibility Pack from here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...ails.aspx?id=3 and installed on my system but surprisingly there is no file created with the name you mentioned above. Below the files I got after installing the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack:
    • O12Conv.cab
    • O12Conv.msi
    • Readme.htm
    • \Catalog\files12.cat

Anyway, in order to fix this what you can do is restart your computer. Press Ctrl+Alt + Del twice at the logon window. This will bring you up with the classic login Widow. Here put username as Administrator and leave the password field blank. Press enter to login. Now download the link I gave above and install the package. Hope you wont be getting any error now.

I see that you need to have Admin rights on the system but what do you do if you are running it on Terminal Server and cant give all users admin permissions.

Most probably that error occurs because of the insufficient permission. You need to be having complete admin rights while installing the package. As mentioned above, login with the default Administrator via classic logon window., that will help.
