product key has been activated the maximum number

I got a new laptop from my School for a project that came with windows 7 and Office Home & student 2007 installed. But the problem is office is not activated. On asking them for the same they given me one product key. When I entered this I got an error saying “the product key has been activated the maximum number of times”. I don’t know what exactly that means but I guess it has been already used on multiple systems.

Anyways, I told them about this and they gave me another key. Now problem is I want to know how can I use this key without re-installing the office again ? Please help.

I think you can do it without re-installing everything again but before that, as you this everything from your school, you should talk them and tell them correct it. This will keep you out of everything. And if still you want to do it yourself than follow the steps given in Microsoft KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456/en-us.

If you don’t have any idea about editing registries and all, I’ll recommend you not to mess here. Better get it done by an IT guy.
