    Office 2010 rtm configures everytime

    Couple of days ago I installed Office 2010 RTM on my Windows 7 ultimate running laptop. It was running with Office 2007 earlier. Now since I installed 2010, every time I try to open Word, Excel, PPT or any office application it directly launches a installer saying “configuring Office”. This pop up appears also every time I start the computer.

    Not just that, I am not able to install Business Contact Manager as well Outlook Connector after the same. It says “I don’t have right Office version installed”. Damn, what is this ? The only way I can use office apps it wait for 5 minutes and let the configuration gets completed. This is really very frustrating. Can anyone help with this ?

    I have good experience with such kind of errors, but don’t worry friend. Let me guess the cause of this error first. Was there any other Office version running before installing Office 2010 RTM ? I guess yes, and you might have either installed 2010 without removing it OR you might have removed it but dint uninstalled completely. Hence you are getting these problems. By the term completely I mean, that you must remove the earlier version as well as its registry entries and files it leave on the system.

    • To do so you can download Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
    • Install the same and launch it from All programs > Accessories.
    • Once launched select all entries you see related to Office 2007 or 2010 (backup your outlook before doing this) and click remove button.
    • Once removed, close this app and restart the system.


    Now install Office 2010 again and whatever you want to install. You wont be getting any error.

    I have the same problem with "configure set up" starting whenever I start Word 2010 - not Powerpoint 2010 or Excel 2010. I have previous versions of all of these programs on my computer. BUT we are supposed to be able to have multiple copies of these programs. The instructions with Office 2010 say that there is a "Custom" installation of Office 2010 which allows different years programs to remain on the same hard drive. For example Word 2000 or Word 2003 ahould be able to remain on the computer even with 2010 installed.

    Is it a matter of erasing or changing values on certain Registry keys? Otherwise, what is the purpose of the Custom installation?
