Unable to Access Internet after Windows 7 installation

Please help!!! I am unable to access Internet through LAN after installing Widows 7 64 bit Ultimate Edition on my PC.

Earlier, I had Windows XP SP3 32 bit installed on the PC and the Internet worked fine. I did Low Level Formatting of the hard disk from using Seagate SeaTools for DOS (order of activities: short test, long test, zero fill, repair bad sectors, short test), then installed Windows 7 64 Bit ultimate edition. After installation, I opened the Device Manager and checked the Ethernet Adapter of LAN card mounted on the motherboard, it says its working properly. In Network Connections, I clicked the TCP/IP version 4 properties to the ISP provide details: subnet, gateway, DNS etc. I disabled and reenabled the ethernet adapter from the Newtork Connection and reset the modem (switched off, removed all cables, waited for a few minutes, then restarted the modem)

I am able to access Internet from the same modem on my Laptop both through LAN cable and through Wifi.

My PC configuration is AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600 processor, ASUS M2V-TVM motherboard, Realtek 8139 LAN Card (mounted in LAN slot), ADSL 2 Modem supplied by Internet Service Provider.

PLEASE HELP! I can't see my beloved desktop distanced from the amazing cyberworld........

I think this solution may help you.
Please switch the network to 'Private', it would have remove your problem.
and also check 'Local area connection' and the 'Network Type' under the 'Network and sharing center'

Mark, thanks for replying. I tried changing the network type to "Home" from "Public". I didn't see a "Private" option, unlike your suggestion.

Also, I checked the "Local Area Connection" and found that it is enabled and the properties match the TCP/IP settings recommended by my Internet Service Provider.

However, I am still unable to access Internet on my PC

I think that when you install windows 7, you get to choose a Home, Work, or Public network, that is if you are connected during the install. So, in my opinion simply switching the network to 'Private' could fix the issue that you are facing. Also, disable any firewall or settings in control panel and see if it works as well.

    Zachary, thanks for replying.

Like you said, I see only three network types: Home, Work, and Public.

I assume you and Mark were referring to "Home" as "Private"? Please correct me if I am mistaken.

I have disabled all firewall settings and changed the network type to "Home" .. yet no success. I even bought a new Ethernet Adapter and mounted it in second LAN slot on the motherboard, loaded drivers, but that didn't help either.

This is a issue when your Ethernet port is damaged or do not respond. The issue also appears when there are not appropriate drivers for Windows 7 for lan port connectivity. So first you can do is play with the drivers for a while and if still the internet is not working I will advice you to show the same to service center if it is under warranty.

Re: Unable to Access Internet after Windows 7 installation

So many things to try so we will go with the basics-
Check all cabling first, is the network card light flashing-

    All good moving on

Ensure the network card has a working driver installed,
click 'START' type 'device manager' open 'network adapters' no issues

    Alle ist gut ja-

open a command prompt and check to see if your IP address is configured properly-
click 'START' type 'CMD' in this window type 'ipconfig' hit Enter

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

    Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::e688:77f5:2b45:ebb3%23
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.12
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

    -----------------------------------------------------------------
If DHCP is working properly you should get something similar to the above

If not you can manually set this up by going into-

Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center

(you can copy and paste the above into

    Open up local area connection-
    Properties
    Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Un-check obtain an IP address automatically-

Now manually fill in the blanks, go to another computer on you network and get a CMD prompt up stated above and type ipconfig. Use this information to fill in the blanks. But make sure this-
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.12

The above address must be unique so if the other computer on the network is using for example 192.168.1.12. Try using 192.168.1.13.

    Good luck
