Need combination of Settings for D-Link WBR1310 with HP Laptop

I initially had issues with connecting the modem until I figured out how to connect it. I use an D-Link WBR1310 wireless router with my windows vista based HP Laptop. I need best setting combination that helps me to share files and internet connection with secure manner. I already do this connection but because of it not work continuously hence, I disconnect it. I hope that many users already do this connection with an secure manner. Any help to do this task please share your experience.
