Yes the virus can infect the Media file. Buffer-overrun exploits can be used to run arbitrary code which will run with the same and infect the Media file. Example for this is that when you download any file or movie from internet it got Trojan virus that can cause issue in your system. But mostly the .exe file get infected. It is easy for virus to infect the exe file to so that they can cause issue in complete computer.
