How to configure network on Maxdata Belinea?

I was just looking for configuring network on Maxdata Belinea on Web, and I saw this post. But in that I didn't find any solutions for configuring network, user & folder. So i thought to start another thread where I can ask about it. Since, you members know about the installation of Maxdata Belinea, I am sure that you should also have an idea about configuring network on it. If anyone has used it, please share about your experience of Maxdata Belinea.

As standard, the b book a built-in Ethernet interface. in the two available expansion slots is an additional network card installed, can be set to fail over or load balancing. The protocols, the b.center all common types such as NFS, FTP, AppleTalk and SMB. The type of authentication for the b.center sets the web management in the tab "Configuration / NAS settings "set. There are different types of work groups and domains. In our case we choose the type of "Primary Domain Controller" Windows (PDC). After entering the IP of the PDC and the corresponding password, the b.center, upon request, all Domain-Users/Group. The tab "Configuration / NAS resources" is the creation of shares. Now you can share the user or group to be assigned with appropriate access rights. In our domain, choose the statement from the domain controller PDC imported from members. Each group or each user can also assign quotas.

Practically, in the tab "edit" the possibility of the system at specified days and times to shut down and restart. However, it should be ensured at these times that users can not edit or open documents. In the edit tab and a snapshot is taken of the volumes, but manually, a time control is unfortunately not available. There are many options for backups that can be configured within the web management in the tab "modification". Similarly, can the integrated anti-virus service on the web-enabled management and update. Whether updates are available for the b.center, can be checked via the web management online. Even the local import of update files is possible. Gives access to detailed reports on the NAS, the flag "Status". For example, all active tasks such as snapshots, backups or antivirus settings are displayed. Log files provide inter alia, of the utilization of the processor, memory or network.

To the performance of the NAS to test appliances, we integrate the Maxdata Belinea b.center in our closed network of laboratories. In it are 15 Windows clients as well as a domain controller running Windows NT 4.0. The clients are on a gigabit switch corresponding Gbit NICs connected to. The tested NAS Appliance also uses a Gb link to the switch. For the benchmarks we use NetBench 7.0.3 by VeriTest. The program determines what to do with Performance File Server file requests from clients. The benchmark suite can access in a network environment with increasing number of clients to the NAS appliance. For the first steps only one client, the end use in our laboratory network 15 clients at the same time the NAS system. This leads each client file a total of 18 operations: set read, write, delete, rename, create, search, and attributes are most important. To increase the network load, allowing the benchmark setting of "think time". This is the time meant that elapses between two file requests. In our testing, we use a think time of zero seconds. The clients load the NAS appliance thus continuously with file operations. As a result passes NetBench the throughput of the NAS appliance in Mbit / s with an increasing number of clients. Additionally allows the benchmark to measure the response time. It defines the time between the file request from a client and the execution of the operation.

Maxdatas Belinea b book shows despite software RAID a decent performance. Under load multiple file operations on the storage in the professional environment recognized benchmark tool NetBench b book the maximum throughput achieved 151 Mbit / s with RAID 5. This maximum - in six simultaneously accessing clients - even decreases at 15 active clients from barely. In comparison to the tested competitors Buffalo TeraStation Pro II and NetGear ReadyNAS NV + is the b.center with many clients cope much better. Responsible for this particular show the AMD Sempron LE-1200 with 2.1 GHz clock frequency. The CPU does the handling of multiple file operations much better than the undersized processors of the competitors - despite software RAID.

The RAID level used for the performance of plays at b.center NetBench hardly matters. Thus, the supply NAS in the - insecure and not recommended - RAID0 with the four hard drives , a maximum of 145 MBit / s with 10 clients, which is maintained at client 15 itself. With the very safe RAID6 is the top value at 136 Mbit / s (7 clients). Here too, the throughput decreases with increasing number of clients with minimal to 129 Mbit / s (15 clients). Even with the typical response time for file operations, the Belinea acts b.center significantly quicker than the tested competitors. time taken a client to an average of 0.29 ms to perform the action. Here is the b.center only just below the value of the ReadyNAS NV + (0.32 ms), but with increasing number of clients is widening the gap. 15 clients try to simultaneously access the b.center, the corresponding actions are performed on average after 1.8 ms. For the competitors, especially with Netgear's ReadyNAS NV +, it means to be patient. When energy is needed, the Belinea b.center with 73 watts at idle at the level of office desktop PCs. This shows for example that also four 3.5-inch SATA drives equipped Buffalo TeraStation Pro II with 48 Watt-sufficient. If the b.center properly requested by the clients, the demand for energy increases up to 95 watts. Are turned off when Maxdata NAS to 2.2 watts.

Maxdatas Belinea b book were particularly impressed by a very ordinary performance. Despite the software RAID b.center supplies thanks to the built Sempron processor, high transfer rates and quick response times. However, approved the NAS also slightly more energy than the slower competitors in our test. The functionality of the Belinea convinced b.center. In addition to comprehensive RAID levels, there are iSCSI functionality, and integrated anti-virus - and backup support. The operation of the Open-E Web-based management is largely self-explanatory - even if it sometimes reacts a little slow. However, this is the integration into network of the competition achieved more comfortable. Also changing RAID levels is solved complicated - even if it is rarely needed. Maxdata has filed bankruptcy during the test. The operation goes according to statements of the company but continues as usual.
