    SBS2003 update failure KB961143

I am non-technical and assigned to run our Windows Small Business Server 2003. I purchased a tutorial and figured out some of the basics. If I am not suppose to use this forum please let me know. The updating of KB961143 failed and I received an error message of 0x8007f070. I tried to copy the event log and I have a printout but the saved version is on my server and not on the regular computer I now have. I can provide a .pdf version of the event log. I assume I'm missing something that needs to be downloaded or updated before this update will work, but I can't tell what. I'm trying to attach the .pdf file. Any ideas? Do I need this update?

This forum is a open community for all those who like to share and want solution on their problems. Regarding the error, it occurs in your system if the DefaultAppPool fails to run under the NetworkService account. To fix the problem you have to open iis manager. Then go to your server name and then click on Application pools. Then in the property you can find DefaultAppPool. In that click on the Identity tab. Now choose the option Predefined and from the drop down box choose Network service > OK. Run iisreset command from cmd.

Thank you Paisley007 for the reply. I appreciated the fact that I could follow your step by step directions. When I got to the DefaultAppPool Identity tab, it already said Network service. Just to be sure, I ran the iisreset command. It did stop and start the DefaultAppPool. However, I still got the sme error message when I tried to install KB961143. I would appreciate any more ideas. Surprisingly I find this more interesting than frustrating.

I have been doing some more research. This particular update is designed to fix a problem with Sharepoint. Looking at my server, I do not believe our server has Sharepoint. My assumption is a previous administrator removed it since we weren't using it. Obviously, the update would not work if it can't find the program it is suppose to fix. I'm not totally sure, but that is my best guess at the moment. If I am right, is there a way to keep this update from constantly trying to update when automatic updates are run?
