No doubt we can say that today corporate networks and non corporate are becoming more complicated to administer and securing. The scenarios presented increasingly more difficult circumstances: Commercial connecting their PDAs to laptops or desktops, permanent connection users by external storage devices, users at different operational needs on a regular networks are, together others, are clear examples. Unfortunately, these circumstances increase considerably the many potential security threats such as malware, exploits, spyware, DOS, Script-kiddies and others. These applications can take control of our system, performing malicious actions in a transparent manner. Worst of all, however, it also can use the compromised system as a gateway to other threats.

The feature NAP (Network Access Protection) is another novelty that offers Windows Server Longhorn in terms of securing the system. We can use NAP to mitigate the impact of situations such as those outlined above, and optimize the level of protection for the corporate network and the information contained herein.

This technology was first thought to be present in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2, but finally appeared in its place NAQS (Network Access Quarantine Control) integrated with IAS (Internet Authentication Service) and access control solution for remote access clients. This implementation through a security model validation via VBScripting was something that appeared later integrated into the solution of Microsoft ISA Server 2004 through a feature known as VPN Quarantine.

The implementation of NAP in Windows Server Longhorn allows us to specify what the health policy of our network. This will establish a series of conditions that help managers determine which computers that connect to our network from any device (VPN, Internet, Wireless with others) meet acceptable health policy and meets the corporate security guidelines. If for us a good health policy to defend us from passing through illness, exercising consistently, good nutrition, etc.., For a team good for health policy would have a fully functioning anti-virus with updated signatures, have installed all security updates, among other measures for securing that may be considered as essential. For computers that do not comply with established security policy, could be two circumstances: first, that is not possible to connect to our corporate network or alternatively that this was limited. In the latter case the connection would be made on an isolated network but the whole corporation, with access only to some resources, and waiting to meet minimum health requirements.

    With NAP can:
    • Ensure health policy in our computers that are configured for DHCP, computers that connect through 802.1X authentication mechanisms, VPN, and equipment of NAP IPSEC security policy applied to their communications.
    • Strengthening policy and health security for laptops when they reconnect to our network
    • Restrict access to our network equipment which does not comply with the health policy of the company

NAP also includes an API (Application Programming Interface) for developers. Through it is possible to generate safety components made to fit the needs of the corporate system.

These technologies can be used independently or jointly with others on the basis of the security model and infrastructure to use. The implementation of health policies are made through an NPS (Network Policy Server) is available in Microsoft Windows Server Longhorn. which replaces IAS (Internet Authentication Service) present in Microsoft Windows Server 2000/2003. NAP will be responsible for carrying out a series of actions:
    • Validation policy
    • Implementation of NAP
    • Restriction (when necessary)
    • Establish guidelines for adjusting the level of health of a client
    • Supervision
