The term network card is usually associated to an expansion card inserted into a slot inside a computer or printer, are also commonly used to refer to embedded devices on the motherboard of the computer such as the interfaces present in the console Xbox or notebooks. It is also used for expansions to the same end in anything resembling a typical card with chips and connectors soldiers, such as network interface for the Sega Dreamcast, the PCMCIA, or cards with connector and form factor CompactFlash and Secure Digital SIO used in PDAs.

Each network card has a unique identification number 48-bit hexadecimal called MAC address (not to be confused with Apple Macintosh). These unique hardware addresses are managed by the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE). The first three octets of the MAC number is known as OUI and identify specific suppliers and are appointed by the IEEE.

It is a chip used in computers or peripherals such as network cards, network printers or intergrades systems to connect two or more devices to each other through some means, connecting wireless, cable UTP cable coaxial, fiber optics, et cetera.

Most cards come with an empty socket BOOT ROM labeled to include an optional ROM enables the computer boot from a network server with an image of a bootable media (usually a diskette), allowing use computers without disk hard or floppy drive. On some motherboards that already incorporate this ROM in the BIOS and the possibility of using cards CompactFlash instead of the hard drive with an adapter, it makes you start to become less frequent, mainly in low-profile cards.

The best the same, this simplifies the network configuration, although it is not necessary. Despite the fact that all network cards may be one and tighter function - link computers together. However, there are a number of features and technologies that may not have cheap network cards and attend more expensive.
