DNS problem with a wireless network in Windows 7

I am facing some problems with the Wireless network which is configured at my home. Home network consist of two computers, out of which one computer is running on Windows Xp and one computer is running on Windows 7. The Windows Xp computer is hardwired to the Linksys wireless router while the Windows 7 laptop is connected to the router using Wireless connection. The problem is whenever I try to connect the Windows 7 laptop to the router, it does not connect and gives an error saying "DNS cannot be resolved". As I am not that good at networking I am not able to find the cause of the problem. Therefore if anybody else is facing similar DNS problem with a wireless network in Windows 7 then please share some information. Thanks in advance.

Check the configuration of the router first. If the router is not configured properly then the computers will not be able to connect to the router using wireless connection. To check the configuration of the router, login to the router using default IP address of the router which can be found out by referring the user manual of the router. Enter the IP address in the address bar of the browser and then hit enter. Open the configuration page and then check if the router is configured properly. You can contact your ISP to get the proper configurations of the router. Check the configuration and do the necessary changes in the configuration. Save the configuration and then see if you are able to access the Internet on the laptop.

There must be some invalid DNS entries in the DNS cache of the laptop due to which you are getting such an error. If there are many invalid entries in the DNS cache of the computer then the computer is not able to add new entry to the cache. Try flushing the DNS cache of the computer and then connect the laptop to the router. To flush the DNS cache of the computer, click on start menu and then select run. Type "cmd" and hit enter. Now in the command prompt window type "ipconfig /flushdns" and hit enter. Now the DNS cache will get flushed. Now try and connect the laptop to the router.

The DHCP on the router must be not working properly. DHCP on the router is responsible for assigning the IP address to the devices which are connected to the router using Wireless connection. DHCP assigns the IP address to the computer from the pool of IP address. To solve the problem you will have to disable the DHCP and then enable it again. To disable the DHCP on the router, connect the router to the computer using the console cable. Open the configuration page and then disable the DHCP. Once the DHCP is disabled on the router, you will have to login to the router again. Once logged in again, enable the DHCP on the router again and save the settings. Reboot the router and then try to connect the laptop to the router.

If the Network interface card on the computer is faulty then the laptop will not be able to connect to the network at all. All the NIC's have a programmed software address which can be used to test the NIC. This software address is called loop back address. To test the NIC of the laptop, click on start menu and click on run. Now type "ping 127.0.0.0" and hit enter. Now the command prompt window will open which will show the number of packets sent and received. If there are no errors then the NIC is working fine but if there are any errors in the packets sent and received then you will have to replace the NIC of the laptop.

The default IP version of Windows 7 is IPv6 while the default IP version of Windows XP is IPv4. Therefore if both the computers are connected together on the same network then the computer working on Windows 7 will not work properly. To connect the Windows 7 computer to the network on which Windows XP is connected, you will have to disable IPv6 support of Windows 7. To disable the IPv6 support, Open the network connection wizard and then go to TCP/IP properties. Remove the check mark from the "Enable IPv6" and then apply the settings. Now restart the computer and then try to connect the laptop to the router. Hopefully the laptop will connect to the router.
