Need help with Cisco Wireless-N Home Router

Hello people, I have a desktop computer which is running on Windows XP operating system. The computer has an Internet connection which is provided by a Cisco Wireless-N home router. Recently I bought a Sony laptop which is installed with Windows 7 and has wireless capability. I want to share the same internet connection with the desktop computer. I tried connecting the laptop to the router using wifi but was not able to connect to it. Hence I Need help with Cisco Wireless-N Home Router to share the same internet connection on both the computers. Any help is more than welcome.

Before implementing any hardware solutions for sharing the Internet connection between two computers, first be sure that the sharing of the connection is allowed between different computers. Many of the service providers do not allow the sharing of the same connection between different computers. For monitor sharing of the connection between the computers, the ISP's track the Mac addresses of the computers which are connected to its connection. Tracking the MAC addresses of the computer helps the ISP in differing the services to the computers which are connected to the network.

If the sharing of the connection is allowed between the computers then you dont require any extra hardware to share the same connection on both the computers. You will just have to configure the router properly so that you are able to share the same connection on the router. Contact your internet service provider and get the settings for the router which are required for sharing the same connection between different computers. Configure the router as per the settings provided by the ISP and then you will be able to access internet connection on the laptop as well.

You can configure the router on your own so that you are able to share the same connection on both the computers. To configure the router to share the connection, first login to the router using the default IP address of the router. The default IP address of the router can be found out by referring the user manual of the router. Type the IP address in the address bar of the browser and then open the configuration page. Select the Wireless section. Now select the authentication password, encryption and the SSID of the router. Once all the entries are filled, save the settings and then reboot the router. Now open the Wifi on the laptop and search for the available networks. Connect to the network which has the SSID which you have provided and press on connect.

The laptop can be directly connected to the router using a wired connection. To connect the laptop using a wired connection, take a CAT 5 straight cable and connect the laptop to the router. Open the network connection wizard on the laptop. Contact your ISP and get a static IP address for the laptop. Now right click on the LAN and select TCP/IP properties. Enter the IP address which is provided by the ISP. Enter the preferred DNS and the default gateway address. Once all the parameters are entered, save and apply the settings. Now you will be able to access internet on the laptop as well.

The default version of IP of Windows 7 is IPv6 while the default version of IP of Windows XP is IPv4 therefore we cannot connect the computers running on Windows 7 and Windows xp on the same network. To be able to connect the computers on the same network, you will have to disable the IPv6 support of Windows 7 so that there is no protocol conflict between the computers. To disable the IPv6 support, go to the TCP/IP properties and then remove the check mark against the Enable IPv6. Once done, save and apply the settings and then reboot the system and try connecting the laptop to the router.

    Hello Zachary,
    Just an FYI for you.

It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibilty.)
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/com...s/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".

There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx

In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!

As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed.

Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assitance and support.

    Thanks again,
