sad ipconfig returns Windows IP Configuration

I recently received a HP Compaq desktop computer (was used in a doctor's office) and was trying to connect it to the internet. I managed to get it to connect when hardwired to the cable modem but really need it to run through a wireless router in order to use my laptop as well.

When I connected it to the wireless router, it changed the IP address to an invalid IP, so, using D-link's suggestion, I entered a static IP address.

    Then the network connection disappeared!

I tried entering ipconfig /all in the command window but it only returns "Windows IP Configuration".

Even when I connected the computer directly to the modem again, the prompt gives me the same response.

I have no idea what happened.

    The system is:
    HP Compaq dc7100
    Windows XP Pro
    Intel Pentium 4

Under network adapters (which is hidden):
Broadcom NetXtremeGigabit Ethernet - Packet Scheduler Miniport
    Direct Parallel
    WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IP) - Packet Scheduler Miniport
    WAN Miniport (L2TP)
    WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
    WAN Miniport (PPTP)

There are no X or ! next to any of the adapters listed. All are enable and all are "working properly".

So where did the network connection go???

    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

Re: ipconfig returns Windows IP Configuration

You can use some kind of network diagnostic tool for that. You can try using Diagnostic Internet 1.0. This diagnostic utility is portable and ultra simple to use to test the internet connection. The target computer is connected to a modem, a handset modem + router or modem and router separate. Accept the USB connection. It determines if there is a flaw in one of the key points of connection: between the PC and modem / router between the modem / router and the internet.
