Windows XP Professional WebClient Service Stopping

    Hi everyone,

I use a mapped drive for one of my windows XP workstations in order to sharepoint document library, but now it is not working any more.i realized the truth that my Web Client Service is permanently stuck on stopping.i'm getting the stuck even if I restart the machine and manually start the service, it will try and stop itself. i can't see any ting in the event log.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

I'm unsure of what the WebClient service actually does in WindowsXP. but believe it is a redirector service for Distributed File Systems.can you think about disabling it can bring it fine if you don't have this type of network . Home users can probably disable it, but I'm sure it doesn't affect performance or security. It most likely does something stupid like resolving share names to UNC address.if you have issue like this with web client service reset some "boogah-boogah" Registry entries

This problem occurs because the WebClient service crashes when it processes a response from the WebDAV server.A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft however a cure to correct the problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing so if you are not severely affected by this problem, if possible you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.in order to apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 installed.

My guess is what this Web Client Service was stuck on Stopping because you must disabled the Remote Procedure Call Service on your machine. you can resolve this issue by deleting a key in registry this is the recommendation from Microsoft's Knowledgebase (ID 838428) the key is
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\Current\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ROOT\LEGACY_RPCSS
Remove this key alone since there are 6 other keys under ROOT.and reboot to you computer to see the perfect working condition
