Hi,
Here is my problem, I just installed Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 on my PS3. But what causes me the problem is my internet connection because I have to put wifi on YDL 6.
Could someone explain how, or give me a link so that I download?
Update the GameOS firmware
Before the wifi works under linux you need to be running at least GameOS firmware version 1.6, please follow these steps in GameOS to ensure you are running the latest firmware.
Reboot into GameOS by logging out or linux (Yellow Dog Symbol on the task bar the select System> Log out) and then clicking "shutdown" from the login menu; Once the PS3 is off push and hold the power button until you hear the 2nd beep (about 5 seconds)
- Go to System> System update
- Select "Update Via Internet"
- Follow prompts to complete the update
- Reset the Default OS by going to Settings> System Settings> Default System
- Select "OtherOS"
- Click "X"
- When asked if you want to "start the other system now?" select "Yes"
If you have not done so already, please upgrade your kernel.
Activate Wifi on the PS3 under Linux
The Wifi on the PS3 in Linux takes a little bit of work to activate wireless networking to use eth0 (Linux ID for the networking device). This unfortunately only allows for either a wired OR wireless connection NOT both. This is due to limitations of the Hypervisor that all "otherOS" (in this case Yellow Dog Linux) have to go through to get to the hardware.
- Log into YDL as a user
- Unplug the wired network cable
- Open the Network configuration menu by clicking on the Yellow Dog logo (Menu Button) from the main shelf, then follow the menus Applications> Applications> System Tools> System Config> Network.
- Enter the root password when asked (for security purposes)
- Click on the "Hardware" tab
- Select the "Sony PS3 Ethernet Dev"
- Click "Delete"
- Confirm deletion by clicking "Yes"
- Confirm again by clicking "Yes"
Set up the Wireless connection
- Click on the "Devices" tab
- Click on "Deactivate"
- Click "New"
- Select "Wireless Connection"
- Click "Forward"
- Select the "Sony PS3 Ethernet Device (eth0)"
- Click "Forward"
- Set the mode to "Auto"
- Select "Specified:" for "Network name: (SSID)
- In the box provided enter the SSID of your access point (this can be found in the management settings for your access point
- Select the Channel that your access point is using (this can be found in the management settings for your access point) (NOTE: only channels 1-11 are legal for use in the USA, please check local laws for other restrictions)
- Set the "Transmit Rate" to "Auto"
- If your access point does not use encryption make sure the box labeled "Key" empty, if it does please complete the "Encryption" selection below now
- Click "Forward"
- If your Network is using DHCP to hand out IP address or if you are unsure select "Automatically obtain IP address settings with DHCP"
- Click "Forward"
- Click "Forward"
- Click "Apply"
- Click "Activate"
- Click "Yes"
- Click "Ok"
- Test your connection, it should be active
Change the Wireless Settings
- Use this when you want to change the access point that the PS3 is connecting to, but you have already configured wireless as above or have installed a version of YDL 5 that already supports wireless
- Open the Network configuration menu by clicking on the Yellow Dog logo (Menu Button) from the main shelf, then follow the menus Applications> Applications> System Tools> System Config> Network.
- Enter the root password when asked (for security purposes)
- Click on the "Devices" tab

- Click "Forward"
- If your Network is using DHCP to hand out IP address or if you are unsure select "Automatically obtain IP address settings with DHCP"
- Click "Forward"
- Click "Apply"
- Click "Activate"
- Click "Yes"
- Click "Ok"
- Test your connection, it should be active
Encryption
This is to allow access to a access point that has encryption (WEP or WPA) enabled. For this process you will need to get the encryption key from the management settings of your access point. These steps are written to be followed from setting up the wireless connection screen.
- A WEP 64-bit key will look like this: 4a 9f 1f 98 f3
- A WEP 128-bit key will look like this: 4b bc 8e 20 e7 1d 24 e4 7f 5d 88 d0 2e
- A WPA-PSK and WPA2 will be selected by the user and vary depending on model,
- As of current WPA-PSK and WPA2 are not supported on the PS3, we are working on getting them supported.
WEP 64-bit and 128-bit
- For "Key:" enter "0x" plus your hex key so for 64-bit it would look like "0x4a9f1f98f3" and for 128-bit it would look like "0x4bbc8e20e71d24e47f5d88d02e" (NOTE: I have not tested with 256-bit encryption as it is still rare)
- Click "Ok"
- Continue with procedure to activate wireless
Enabling WiFi in the PS3 on Linux operating system.
You will need some time to activate the wireless connection to ETH0 (LINUX ID for the network device). It is permissible for either a wired or wireless connection to, not for both. Due to the limitations set on Nypervisor (Hypervisors program manager operating systems) so «otherOS« (other OS) (in this case, YDL) needed to reach the «iron» (hardware).
- Log in YDL as a user.
- Unplug the power cord.
- Open the Connection Settings menu by pressing the menu button YDL, then follow the menu
- Applications / Applications / System Tools / System Config / Network.
- Enter the password (to protect).
- Click «Hardware»
- Select «PS3 ETHERNET DEVICE»

Encryption
To decrypt an access point that has been encrypted (wep or wpa). To do this you need a decryption key, it can be found in the manual settings, an access point.
Print all of the following, it will be displayed on the screen the wireless connection.
- WEP 64-bit code would look like this: 4a 9f 1f 98 f3
- WEP 128-bit code would look like this: 4b bc 8e 20 e7 1d 24 e4 7f 5d 88 d0 2e
- WPA-PSK and WPA2, you choose yourself, depending on the model,
- currently WPA-PSK and WPA2 is not supported in the PS3.
WEP 64 and 128 - bit
- For Key, enter the «0h» plus your hex key so that the 64-bit code looked as «0h4a 9f 1f 98 f3», and 128-bit so «0x4b bc 8e 20 e7 1d 24 e4 7f 5d 88 d0 2e» (attention, we do not tested 256-bit code, and decoding, it is used very rarely)
- Click «OK»
- Make the connection, it should be active.
