Configuring security settings of Windows server 2008

I had installed windows server 2008 in my network systems to enhanced my intranet activities.
As windows server 2008 in one of the latest available OS, which provide high end features and services.
But on the other hand i want to make my network more secure also. How can i configure my security
setting to make my network more reliable.

Local Administrative access is one of the insecure setting than can be provided to an user. The user gains a control over the server by just adding his account in the Administrative group. Even if the network is configure to deny access the user can still exploit the network.
The use can modify domain, regisrty file, permission to other file or folder, system setting, install application, access any website, etc.
You can remove the user from the Administrative Group by the Group Policy of Windows Server 2008.
Open Group Policy by typing gpedit.msc in the Run box and navigate to
User Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel
Right click on Local Users and Groups and select New - Local group
In the window to configure, type Administrator in the Group Text Box and select Remove the current User.
After press ok and restart your computer.

To protect your system from your unauthorized attack you can reset your administrator password. This reduces the chance of threats on the network system. It is possible that unknown users can change you password and gain access to your system.
If you keep on changing your password at an interval of time is quiet impossible for the unknown users to access your network.
To do this Click on Start Menu > Run > gpedit.msc
Go to :
Computer Configuration\Preferences\Control Panel
Now open the New Local User window by right clicking on Local Users and Groups.
Type your password and check the box User must change password at next logon.
click ok to exit.

You can protect you computer from unknown threat by configuring firewall and UAC control of Windows Server 2008.
As you are using windows server 2008 you can configure the firewall and use the IPsec feature also.
Open your Group Policy window and navigate to the tree -
Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Windows Firewall with Advanced Security\Windows Firewall with Advanced Security
When you expand you will get three options :
Right click any of it and select New Rule
And configure the setting as per your requirement.
Other than this you can also configure your UAC control setting via Group Policy.
You will to navigate to - Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options
