    system ports and protocols

    hi all,

im a novice in system & networking concepts, im probably confused with the analagy of ports & port numbers.

can some one help me understand what are the basic system ports (avaliable on the machine) and what is it used for?

i do know the different port numbers for services such as ftp, http ..... but dont exactly understand the data communication methodology with them.

can some one help me undertand them ?

    thank you

    Re: system ports and protocols

The port numbers are divided into three ranges: the Well Known Ports, the Registered Ports, and the Dynamic and/or Private Ports. The range for assigned ports managed by the IANA is 0-1023.
